Completed after a series of devastating shipwrecks, this lighthouse was one of the last major coastal beacons built on the Eastern Seaboard. It was first illuminated in 1875 to fill a navigational gap along the Outer Banks, known as the “Graveyard of the Atlantic.” Unpainted red brick distinguishes this 162-foot tower. Its original Fresnel lens still lights nearly 20 miles of dark space out to sea.
